Abusive Relationships

We hesitate to bring this issue to our site because we don't want anyone to think we are singling out Muslim communities. Unfortunately, domestic violence can be found in every culture regardless of economic status or religious convictions. However, we did want to point out that the Quran stipulates ways a husband can 'discipline' his wife . These verses are often used to justify abusive behavior.

We do not believe there is ever any reason a wife should be given the silent treatment, sent to her 'bed' or 'hit' to make her 'behave.' She is an equal partner in a marital relationship and should never be treated as anything less. A husband has the responsibility to love his wife, treat her as he would treat himself, and be willing to lay down his life for her (Ephesians 5:25 – “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her”).
